Abstract
This dissertation examines the application of Value Stream Mapping (VSM) to improve the management process of detained containers at MSC Algeria, the world's leading container shipping company. Set against an Algerian context characterised by heavy dependence on maritime imports, significant infrastructural constraints and a specific regulatory framework, the issue of containers immobilised beyond their free-time period represents a major operational and financial challenge.
Grounded in an interpretativist paradigm, this research adopts a qualitative approach based on the triangulation of three data sources: direct field observation, documentary analysis of internal tracking tools, and semi-structured interviews conducted with four logistics service agents. The methodology draws on Lean Management tools, particularly VSM and the Ishikawa diagram, to map and analyse the process in its current state.
The findings reveal a process with a Process Cycle Efficiency (PCE) of approximately 0.036%, and a Lead Time estimated at around 150 days, dominated by waiting and over-processing wastes. Seven types of Muda are identified, the most critical being the cumulative 120 days of inaction across eight successive manual follow-ups and the absence of a structured escalation procedure. Based on this diagnosis, and following discussions with the agency's director and the logistics service agents, six improvement proposals have been formulated. Their combined implementation could reduce the Lead Time by 50%, bringing it down to a target of 75 days. The future-state VSM simulation translates this target vision graphically and constitutes an operational roadmap directly usable by the agency's management.
